The Steiner Series: Part 3 of 10

Mediumship is the ability to communicate spirit-to-spirit with beingness, often thought of in terms of those who have passed on. But that is not the only definition of this natural human ability.

While clairvoyance emphasizes inner seeing, Mediumship is the ability to run an energy from outside of you, through you as a channel.

This can be communication, emotion, or energy itself—simply a sense of presence.

  • In spiritualist traditions, this involves inviting spirits to speak through the practitioner.

  • In everyday life, you are doing this when you act as a mouthpiece for a group energy, or when you cry watching a TV commercial. Even eating can be defined as a mediumship experience as you are moving an energy from outside of you through you.

Rudolf Steiner approached mediumship with caution.

He was highly critical of practices that encouraged passive or unconscious states, such as trance mediumship, where the medium surrenders control of their body or mind to a spirit. Steiner believed such practices could disrupt the development of the individual’s spiritual faculties and make one vulnerable to misleading influences.

The "I-Being" and Spiritual Sovereignty

Instead of surrender, Steiner advocated for Conscious Spiritual Dialogue.

He described this as communication with the spiritual world rooted in clarity, self-awareness, and sovereignty.

In Steiner’s view, spiritual beings are real, intelligent entities that can either support or hinder our development. His teachings highlight the importance of discernment: not every spirit or message is beneficial just because it’s non-physical.

The key is to strengthen the higher self or spiritual ego so we do not lose ourselves in enmeshment to external psychic energy. This means maintaining awareness, intention, and self-integrity in every spirit encounter - this is where mediumship is an ability to be fostered and trained, rather than a “passive accident.”

Healthy mediumship is relational and co-creative. It is not about proving something to others or giving over power to spirit, but about deep listening and wise boundaries.

We become bridges between worlds, not doorways left swinging open.

🔭 One of the truly magical things about our community at Art of the Seer is that since we share a commitment to the same tools, techniques, and practice container, it’s easy to reach out to each other members and create your own reading and healing exchanges. Using this post as inspiration, find a partner to work with—perhaps someone you know from a current or previous class, or post in the practicum chat groups that you were inspired by this post and find someone new to explore with.

🏄‍♂️ Weekly Practitioner Exchange: 30-Minute Reading & Healing

Pair up with a reading partner and exchange 30-minute Clairvoyant Readings together. Practice both giving and receiving as a way of deepening your experience and relationship to this topic.

The Reading Topics:

  • The Bridge vs. The Door: Look at the readee’s aura. Do they have the boundaries of a "Bridge" (controlled access) or a "Swinging Door" (indiscriminate openness going both ways)?

  • Everyday Mediumship: Look at a place in their life where they are running "outside energy" (emotions, group-think, family programming) through their body. Are they aware they are doing this?

  • The I-Being: Look at their spiritual seniority when they communicate with guides. Do they shrink? Do they merge? Or do they stand equal?

  • The Vetting Process: Look at their ability to say "Hello" to a spirit and ask its business. Do they have permission to challenge the beings they encounter?

Healing Focus: Give the readee a healing on their Aura Boundary. Help them patch any holes or "swinging doors" and help them set the vibration of their space to "Sovereign."

🧘🏾‍♂️ One Small Step: A Solo Micro-Action

Sometimes something is too charged to feel safe being vulnerable in interpersonal spaces with it at first. If this is really stimulating you, you can work this energy in meditation using your tools, or in moments of embodiment and pause throughout your day.

Meeting a Trusted Guide

This guided visualization helps establish safe, intentional contact with a benevolent spiritual ally.

  1. Create a Sacred Room: Ground yourself. In the center of your head, imagine a peaceful inner sanctuary—a forest glade, a library, or a temple.

  2. Invite with Intention: Invite a spirit guide to meet you here. Say hello.

  3. The Vetting: Ask the being: "What is your name?" and "What is your purpose here?" Command that only beings in alignment with your highest good may enter this space.

  4. Observe: How do you feel in their presence? (Safe? Calm? Anxious?) Trust your gut.

  5. Close: Thank the guide. Move the being out of your space completely. Fill in with your own gold energy.

Tell me in the comments: Who are the guides you feel most aligned with right now?

📓 Journaling and Self-Reflection Prompts

Sometimes we need to write it down to get it out of our aura. People learn, experience, and process energy in a variety of ways—visually, auditorily, conceptually—and here at AotSA, we validate all those different forms. If you process through writing, take 10 minutes with your journal to "audit" a recurring picture in your space you’ve come across using this template.

  • The Everyday Medium: Reflect on the idea that "crying at a commercial" is a form of mediumship. Where else in your daily life are you channeling energy that isn't yours in a similar way?

  • Power Dynamics: Reflect on how you view your role in spirit communication. Do you feel in control, or do you ever feel overtaken or unsure? What would "Autonomy" look like for you in this context?

  • The Roster: Who is on your "Spirit Team"? Write down what you know (or intuit) about them, and what kind of relationship you want to build. (e.g., I want a partnership, not a parenthood.)
