The Steiner Series: Part 1 of 10

Psychic development involves awakening subtle abilities like intuition, clairvoyance, and energy healing. These faculties have been acknowledged in spiritual traditions across cultures, and in different forms, for all of recorded history.

But in the early 20th century, Rudolf Steiner—the Austrian mystic, philosopher, and founder of Anthroposophy—offered a radical modern approach.

Steiner insisted on disciplined, conscious development rather than passive mysticism.

Steiner himself was a trained clairvoyant who investigated spiritual realities with scientific rigor. He wasn't interested in vague feelings or spooky phenomena; he aimed to integrate mysticism with reason.

This series will interweave Steiner’s insights with the practical techniques we use here at the Academy, creating a bridge between his esoteric wisdom and your own journey of spiritual training.

Exacting Clairvoyance: The Shift from Trance to Presence

Steiner observed that in ancient times, psychic vision often arose spontaneously. It was a kind of "dreamlike clairvoyance"—a foggy, semi-conscious state where the seer had to leave their rationality behind to access the spirit world.

But modern humanity has developed strong individual ego consciousness and intellectual thinking. We cannot (and should not) long to go back to sleep, as this development was necessary and contributes to part of our shared reality.

Therefore, our psychic abilities must now be cultivated consciously and on purpose, alongside our reasoning or analytical mind.

Steiner’s term for this was "Exacting Clairvoyance."

This indicates a precise, awake spiritual perception achieved through exercises in meditation and self-development. Rather than slipping into trances or uncontrolled visions, Steiner emphasized awakening higher senses while maintaining full body awareness.

Successful psychic development today follows this principle: it is not about losing or abdicating consciousness, but expanding it.

The Curriculum of the Awake

This introductory post sets the stage for our ten-part exploration. Over the next few months, we’ll look at core topics—from clairvoyance and mediumship to spiritual anatomy like chakras and the astral body—each building on the last in complexity.

We will reference Steiner’s classic teachings (such as Knowledge of the Higher Worlds) alongside the curriculum techniques used in my training classes.

By the end of this series, you should have a grounded understanding of the form of psychic development I work with: one that is enriched by fore-bearers like Steiner’s spiritual science, and validated by your own hands-on experience.

🔭 One of the truly magical things about our community at Art of the Seer is that since we share a commitment to the same tools, techniques, and practice container, it’s easy to reach out to each other members and create your own reading and healing exchanges. Using this post as inspiration, find a partner to work with—perhaps someone you know from a current or previous class, or post in the practicum chat groups that you were inspired by this post and find someone new to explore with.

🏄‍♂️ Weekly Practitioner Exchange: 30-Minute Reading & Healing

Pair up with a reading partner and exchange 30-minute Clairvoyant Readings together. Practice both giving and receiving as a way of deepening your experience and relationship to this topic.

The Reading Topics:

  • The Ancient vs. The Modern: Look at the readee’s natural psychic tendencies. Do they tend to go "dreamy/foggy" (Ancient style) when they open up, or do they stay "sharp/awake" (Modern style)? Why?

  • The Ego’s Role: Look at the relationship between the three main areas of consciousness - Mind, Body, and Spirit. Are they fighting each other or in harmony?

  • Exact Clairvoyance: Look at the vibration of "Exact Clairvoyance"—spiritual sight with full body awareness. What color is this vibration for them?

  • The Stretch: Look at the edge of their aura. What does it look like when they "expand" consciousness rather than "leaving" consciousness?

Healing Focus: Give the readee a healing on their 6th Chakra (Third Eye). Help them clear any "unconscious" pictures or beliefs that say they have to be "dream-like" to be spiritual. Reset the chakra to "Awake and Aware."

🧘🏾‍♂️ One Small Step: A Solo Micro-Action

Sometimes something is too charged to feel safe being vulnerable in interpersonal spaces with it at first. If this is really stimulating you, you can work this energy in meditation using your tools, or in moments of embodiment and pause throughout your day.

Steiner’s Object Concentration

Steiner advised training the mind by focusing on a single, simple object to build the "muscle" of exact perception.

  1. Pick a simple object (a pencil, a stone, a leaf).

  2. Set a timer for 2 minutes.

  3. Look at the object. Think only about the object. (Its shape, its color, its material).

  4. If your mind wanders to your grocery list, gently bring it back to the object.

This is not just focus; it is the practice of directing your consciousness at will, which is the prerequisite for Exact Clairvoyance.

Tell me in the comments: Do you view spiritual abilities as "gifts" that just happen to you, or "skills" to be trained? How does Steiner’s view sit with you?

📓 Journaling and Self-Reflection Prompts

Sometimes we need to write it down to get it out of our aura. People learn, experience, and process energy in a variety of ways—visually, auditorily, conceptually—and here at AotSA, we validate all those different forms. If you process through writing, take 10 minutes with your journal to "audit" a recurring picture in your space you’ve come across using this template.

  • The Pull:

What specifically draws you to psychic development? Was it a desire for power, a need for healing, or a simple curiosity? Be honest about the "why."

  • The Intuition Audit:

Reflect on a recent experience of "unexplained knowing." Did it come to you in a dream (passive) or did it come while you were fully awake and engaged (active)?

  • The Intention:

Steiner believed clear intention was the safety rail for psychic work. Write one sentence that defines your intention for this 10-part series. (e.g., "I open myself to higher understanding with clarity and integrity.")
